Control over critical COVID-19 Advanced non-invasive respiratory system support: high-flow nasal oxygen and non-invasive ventilation- Part 2 – World Health Organization

Overview

For patients on HFNO with persistent hypoxaemia or respiratory system distress:

• Look into the equipment: inspect the outside of the device, the tubing (circuit), the prong for any manifestation of mechanical damage, confirm they fit and also the filters have established yourself. Make sure the settings work and flow is maximized.

• Look into the oxygen source: there’s sufficient oxygen available and flowing with the device. If FiO2 &gt 50% of oxygen is required, the unit should have a blender.

• Check there’s no obstruction with secretions: patients with COVID-19 might have very thick secretions which might block big and small airways and cause sudden respiratory system degeneration.
