Wastewater Surveillance isn’t only for COVID-19 Any longer
Marin County Public Health is building around the surveillance systems set up for monitoring COVID-19 to watch monkeypox levels within our community. A Stanford College –based initiative, WastewaterSCAN, helps Marin along with other San Francisco Bay Area counties monitor wastewater for COVID-19, monkeypox, and periodic infections such as the flu.
People have contracted monkeypox will probably shed herpes within their urine and feces, in addition to from lesions and dental secretions. This will make Monkeypox a great candidate for monitoring in wastewater.
If your wastewater sample tests positive, this means that there’s a minumum of one person have contracted the monkeypox virus inside the facility catchment area.
Monkeypox viral DNA continues to be detected by in a number of sites within the San Francisco Bay Area and Northern California. Wastewater collection sites sampling for SARS-CoV-2 and monkeypox infections in Marin have detected monkeypox in Marin throughout the same period as our first clinical cases were diagnosed.
WastewaterSCAN started this testing in mid-June and it is now supplying this same service across the nation. Information is available via WastewaterSCAN and publichealth.verily.com.  Find out more about WastewaterSCAN.
